The Two-Layered Book and Storyworld, with Transgressions : Graham Rawle's Overland

Mikko Keskinen’s chapter focuses on the graphic and book design peculiarities in Graham Rawle’s novel Overland (2018). The novel’s design and layout play a vital role in the story and relate to various aspects and hiatuses in its ontological and epistemological divisions. The novel is printed in the landscape format and must therefore be rotated sideways and be read horizontally. The unusually executed book object shows what the discourse tells: the division of Overland into two narrative settings as well as the transgressions between them. The novel also foregrounds questions of fictionality, imagination, simulacra, and literature’s relation to other media and artworks.
