Twitter työkaluna kriisitoiminnassa

The adoption of Twitter has increased over the past few years. Meanwhile greater demands are placed on the management of crisis response than has previously been the case. There is a real need to gather situational information. Typically this information is received from emergency calls but nowadays there is also situational information available in Twitter. In this thesis we show that the necessary information can move smoothly from the Twitter users to decision makers and other first responders and crisis response management can significantly benefited from this information already during the crisis. In this literature review we explore how crisis management itself is not a new concept but the way to collect required information can be improved. The focal point is in what kind of benefits are involved with the use of this type of information. Crisis management requires a significant amount of planning and organizing actions, which is only possible to do efficiently with enough situational information with which to analyze the situations. This is where user generated content can be of great benefit. The results of this research state three significant factors where Twitter can be used effectively as a tool to monitor and collect information by emergency services or crisis managers.
