Oppimisanalytiikan hyödyt oppimiselle moderneissa verkko-oppimisympäristöissä

Learning analytics is a field where data generated by students in an e-learning environment is analyzed to improve learning and teaching. It has been predicted to cause many benefits to the understanding, skills, motivation and guidance of students. Because of the novelty of the field, there exists few studies where the fulfillment of these benefits are studied, and therefore the study was conducted to find out how these benefits are realized in a practical environment. The research was conducted by collecting and grouping the benefits envisioned by previous studies, and comparing them to the experiences of teachers and students using a learning analytics-based e-learning environment. The participants were interviewed, surveyed and observed in multiple classes. The research showed the environment benefiting especially the information retention of students and teachers, which contributed to easier self-evaluation. The data gathered from the students also benefited the teacher in offering a lot of data on the students’ usage of the system and individual studying habits, and helped identify students most in need of guidance. The individuality promoted by the environment’s study method also gained a lot of support from the previous research, with students feeling more in control of their learning thanks to the encouragement of the learning environment, which motivated the students. Using a learning analytics-based learning environment also offered better cost-efficiency and environment-friendliness to the school, and enabled more flexible staff management of the school with the eased use of substitute teachers.
