This master’s thesis studies how the anime and manga series Puella Magi Madoka Magica expresses, modifies and re-constructs its genres. The theoretical framework of the thesis is based on genre studies, mainly Rick Altman’s and Alastair Fowler’s theories, and general anime and manga studies. The thesis focuses especially on three genres expressed by the text: fantasy, mahō shōjo and Christian allegory. The thesis shows how Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a work that expresses, modifies and re-constructs its genres and is a part of a larger cultural and historical continuity of anime and manga. The genres studied in the thesis express, modify and re-construct themselves using all the possibilities offered by the audiovisual medium. The study also shows how the reception of the work has a significant impact on defining the genres.
