Information Systems Science, Bachelor’s Thesis Supervisor: Pirhonen, Maritta This bachelor's thesis discusses the significance of knowledge management as a factor to the success of IT-projects. The thesis explains the meaning of knowledge, the definitions of tacit and explicit knowledge and describes knowledge management. The thesis discusses various problems and risks con-cerning knowledge management and certain means for managing it. The thesis intends to identify the importance of knowledge management to IT-project suc-cess by answering the question of how the lack of knowledge management can cause projects to fail, and what tools and methods have been developed for it. These tools are often social, document and process based, and attempt to share knowledge within project teams, or transfer knowledge into the long term or-ganizational memory. As a result of the thesis, several knowledge issues and means of preparing against them were identified. Furthermore, methods were found to prevent potential issues, and critical knowledge was identified, which should be stored by project teams. Also, the significance of tacit knowledge was highlighted in many cases. The thesis has been limited to concern IT-projects, due to the amount of different project environments. The thesis was accom-plished as a literature review, by using as recent literature as possible, depend-ing on the topic.
